Nasturtiums

Nasturtiums
Tropaeolum majus
Growing Tips
- Full sun is best.
- Poor or average soil ensures more flowers, fewer leaves.
- Perfect for borders, hanging baskets, and raised beds.
Soil Preparation
- Do not over-amend—too much fertility prevents blooming.
- Choose well-draining soil; sandy or loamy is ideal.
- Direct sowing produces the strongest vines/bushes.
Watering Basics
- Water regularly but not excessively.
- Nasturtiums prefer slightly dry soil; overwatering slows flowering.
- In containers, water when the top 1–2" of soil dries out.
Pest Control
- Excellent trap crop for aphids—use strategically near veggies.
- Remove heavily infested leaves or spray with water/neem.
- Caterpillars may nibble but rarely cause major damage.
Harvesting & Storage
- Flowers and leaves are best used fresh.
- For storage, keep in a sealed container with a paper towel for 1–2 days.
- Seed pods can be harvested green and stored in brine for homemade “capers.”
